Linda Hunt plays a Chinese-Australian photographer who accompanies Mel Gibson's character in Jakarta. Linda Hunt won a role as Best Supporting Actress and recieved mixed reactions for her Oscar.

Although her role was awarded, it brought much debate on whether or not she deserved the role compared to an actual Asian actor. Asian actors and actresses rarely landed high-profile roles, which isn't much different from today's popular media.
