SCARLETT
JOHANSSON

Scarlett Johansson will play Motoko Kusanagi in the upcoming film adaptation, Ghost in the Shell. This casting has recieved backlash because this is another case of Asian characters being assigned to White actors.

The series reflect Japan's relationship with technology and is a story that isn't easily Westernised. Jon Tseui tweets that "It is inherently a Japanese story, not a universal one...you can 'Westernize' the story if you want, but at that point is no longer Ghost in the Shell because the story is simply not Western"
Whitewashing, even today, is still present. The differences from old films and modern films maybe seem drastic in change, but there are still issues of White Actors playing Asian characters when the opportunities for Asian actors are extremely limited.
